86 Per Cent Indians Believe Misinformation and Harmful Deepfakes Will Affect Future Elections: Adobe Study
According to Adobe’s “Future of Trust Study for India”, almost 81 per cent of Indians believe the content they see online has been altered in some way or another and that they have trouble verifying the legitimacy of the information.
Adobe today released a report titled ‘Future of Trust Study for India’, which talks about misinformation and the impact of AI-generated content on Indian elections. The company says it surveyed over 2,000 Indian residents with the aim to “understand public perceptions and sentiment about the societal impact of generative AI and misinformation, including its implications within the context of the ongoing elections in India”.
The findings suggest that people across India have a “strong desire” to access tools to verify the source and trustworthiness of information shared online. It also highlights the urgent need for media literacy campaigns which can help educate people about the dangers of deep fakes and help them access tools which separate fact from fiction.
“With the ongoing elections, now is the time to embrace protective technologies like Content Credentials to rebuild trust in the digital ecosystem,” says Prativa Mohapatra, Vice President & Managing Director, Adobe India.”
Other key findings of the study tag misinformation as one of the biggest threats facing society and say that around 81 per cent of respondents fear that the content they consume on the internet might be altered in some way to spread false news. An equal percentage of people also say that it is becoming increasingly difficult to verify whether the content they come across is trustworthy.
Almost 45 per cent of Indians also say they have either stopped or decreased their use of certain social media because of the amount of misinformation being spread on the platform. When it comes to elections in India, a whopping 86 per cent say they believe misinformation and deepfakes will impact future elections and that election candidates should be stopped from using generative AI in their promotional content.
While 93 per cent of people say they want to know if the content they are consuming has been generated using AI, a similar amount of people say it is essential that they are provided with tools which can help them verify the legitimacy of the source.
