Rugged Rides and Refined Gear: Gravel Biking Shines at Eurobike
The bicycle industry worldwide is changing, and gravel bike is leading the way, representing adventure, versatility, and innovation. The bicycle industry association of Germany (ZIV) reported that gravel bikes produced 6.5% of total bicycle sales in 2024! Gravel has grown from a combined 5% of road bicycles and gravel bicycles in 2021. This growth is because gravel can ride everything from well-maintained pavement to rugged trails.
Gravel bikes have embraced the versatility of commuter bicycles, making them a bicycle of the future. These bikes have tough all-terrain tires from companies like Schwalbe and Pirelli, can support attachments like mudguards and rear racks, and they have some type of racing or ergonomic handlebar. They are being used all over the world not just as short-distance travel bikes, but as trouble-free partners in exploring experiences off the grid.
Performance and Aerodynamics Changed
Advances in technology have taken gravel biking into the sphere of competition. With the new ‘Race Gravel’ comes new technology, like aerodynamics, hidden cables and super light, stiff rims. The new and lighter single chainring drivetrains with up to 13 gears are solid for uphill climbing and are best ridden fast.
One of the major exhibits at Eurobike 2025 is the new Superfast gravel bike from Germany’s Bike Ahead Composites. The company developed this new model from community user feedback on social media and it is a carbon bike with many patents. It encombases concepts of sustainability, personalization and super low tire carbon emissions, the concept of gravel riding in a modern way.
Many riders are not giving up on the idea of gravel biking, but still want or need an extra shove from the bike. E-gravel bikes may be for you. The Simplon Grid e:Light has a nearly invisible TQ motor and only provides assistance to the rider when it is needed. But there is nothing about an e-gravel bike that is unlike its non… e-gravel bike brothers but adds some range and comfort to the gravel bike experience.
The trend has even caught the attention of Brompton, known for its folding bikes. Their latest release features compact 20-inch gravel tires and wide MTB handlebars, combining portability with off-road capability—ideal for urban explorers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
Tourism and Everyday Utility
Tourism boards across Europe, such as Tourismus Oberbayern München e.V., are now integrating gravel biking into travel packages, promoting scenic routes through the Hallertau region and the Alpine foothills. At the same time, practical accessories like Valkental’s UrbanX, which doubles as a pannier and backpack, and Ortlieb’s Quick-Rack (supporting up to 20kg with minimal weight), make gravel bikes increasingly suitable for everyday use.
Bikepacking: Adventure on Two Wheels
More than just transport, gravel biking represents a lifestyle rooted in exploration and sustainability. Bikepacking—the practice of carrying essentials in compact, frame-mounted bags—has grown into a full-fledged movement. Solutions from brands like Cyclite, which will showcase its new aerodynamic and lightweight nano bag series, allow riders to embark on minimalist adventures without compromising handling or speed.
Standardized mounts and frame designs support secure and tool-free attachment of gear, making overnight trips and long-distance expeditions seamless. Whether it’s a compact espresso maker or a modular sleeping system, gravel bikes are evolving into complete adventure ecosystems.
Eurobike 2025: Insights, Innovation, and Interaction
Eurobike 2025 will also host the Gravel Talks, moderated by gravel biking authority Gunnar Fehlau. These sessions, held on Friday, June 27, will delve into key themes: from gear choices and travel planning to the role of social media in shaping community narratives.
Adding to the immersive experience, the Bike Adventure Area will bring together sporting, touring, and outdoor lifestyle elements—offering hands-on exposure to the latest innovations in gear, travel solutions, and sustainable outdoor living.
